Today I had a conversation about how saving money is like maintaining sobriety. In both cases, you are resisting and urge because you are thinking about the future.

Taking things moment by moment, “one day at a time,” is great for handling stress and managing emotions.

Considering the future, asking yourself, “Where do I want to be in a year?” is great for making wise choices and living well.

Saving money. Maintaining sobriety from your drug of choice. Eating well. Exercising your body at least a little. Taking daily time for prayer. These are good practices. When life is good and stable and comfortable, these are good things to do because life always changes. Someday life will be hard and chaotic and uncomfortable. Crises come up. How you prepare for the crisis when things are calm will make a big difference in how you manage the crisis.

So then. Save a little money. Pray regularly. Eat well and take care of your body. Make and keep friends. Consider today. Consider the future. Be anxious for nothing. Be wise.
